The Many Games of Poker

Although we've all heard of poker, many people think of it as Texas Holdem. While Holdem is certainly a poker game, it's far from the only one out there. In fact, most games with hand ranks and betting formats that are pre-established are considered to be poker games.

Another feature that poker games share is blinds or antes. Blinds and antes are bets that some or all players must place at the start of a hand. They guarantee that the hand will have some action. Antes are placed by every player, while blinds are just placed by two players per hand. Some poker games include an ante system while others, like Holdem, include a blinds system.

One of the other major features of most poker games is that they are, in some way, based upon hand rank. Many of us are familiar with basic poker hand names, such as two pairs, three of a kind and full house. The trick is in knowing which ones are the best. In traditional high games, like Holdem, the highest hand wins, so a full house would beat two pairs.

On the other hand, though, there are poker games that don't use that system exactly. In Razz, for instance, the lowest hand is the winner, so the best possible hand to have is A, 2, 3, 4, 5. In still other games, like Omaha Hi/Lo, both the best and worst hands win. Sometimes, a single player might have both. For example, A, 2, 3, 4, 5 is the best possible low hand, but it also makes a straight, which is a great high hand.

No matter what version of poker you play, it's important to familiarize yourself with the rules and to practice your skills. You can't expect to win every hand, especially at first. It takes time and patiences. You should start out by playing smart, tight poker.

Once you feel comfortable with a specific game, if you want to, you can practice the art of the poker bluff or semi-bluff. Bluffing at poker isn't easy and it isn't an exact science. You have to be able to stay calm and keep a straight face in any situation, if you want to be a successful poker bluffer. Also, of course, if you want to be successful, you need to learn to recognize when other people are bluffing at you, too.

Finally, be sure that you fully understand what type of poker game you're playing. Some use combinations of face up and face down cards. Those are called Stud games. Others use only cards dealt to each player face down. Those are called Draw games. A third category is called Community and involves both face down cards dealt to each player and face up community cards. One Community game is Texas Holdem.

Also, be sure to understand what type you are playing within the game. For example, are you playing 7 Card or 7 Card Hi/Lo. Are you playing limit poker or no-limit poker? If you don't know the exact type of game you are playing, you aren't likely to win at poker, after all.
